Barbados to Remove Queen Elizabeth as Head of State

Barbados wants to remove Queen Elizabeth from the post of head of state. The government of this Caribbean country wants to become a republic.
 

The former British colony gained independence in 1967. But Barbados, like some other countries that were part of the British Empire, maintained a formal link with the British monarchy.

According to the country’s government, it is time to put our colonial past behind us completely.

In a written statement, Prime Minister Mia Mottley said that the people of Barbados want to see someone from Barbados as head of state.

According to Buckingham Palace, the issue is entirely up to the people and government of Barbados.

In addition to the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth is still the head of state in 15 other British colonies. This includes Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica and several other countries.
