Acidity and bloating can be exacerbated by the colder months. Staying sedentary with minimal physical activity and consuming more calories can have a negative impact on your gut health. Furthermore, certain unhealthy habits such as drinking too much tea or coffee, reclining down just after eating, and eating a lot of spicy food might exacerbate the problem.
Staying active, eating a balanced diet, and avoiding stress are all ways to avoid acidity and the discomfort that comes with it. People who are prone to acidity should avoid specific foods. In this situation, eating smaller meals rather than a large one can help, and resting down about two hours after eating is recommended rather than napping directly after lunch or dinner.
Making lifestyle changes such as getting adequate rest, drinking plenty of water, sleeping well, practicing Yoga, pranayama, meditation, and exercising frequently can all assist with acidity problems.
Dr. Dixa Bhavsar, an Ayurveda expert, explains what to do:
- Limit spicy, sour, salty, fermented, fried, and quick food intake. These foods are more difficult to digest and may cause heartburn.
- Don’t overeat; avoid sour fruits: Instead of a large dinner, eat several small meals throughout the day if it’s easier for your digestive system. If eaten on an empty stomach, sour fruits like oranges and berries can trigger heartburn.
- If acidity is a problem, don’t stay hungry for long periods of time. Lunch, in particular, should not be skipped. Irregular and untimely eating should be avoided. Dinners should be served early.
- Avoid foods that contain a lot of garlic, salt, oil, chilies, and other spices. Non-vegetarian foods should be avoided at all costs.
- Avoid lying down in a supine position right after eating. The optimum position to take is left lateral.
- Smoking, alcohol, tea, coffee, and aspirin-like medicines should all be avoided.
- Avoiding stress is the final and most significant factor in keeping acidity under check.
Acidity therapies at home
According to Dr. Bhavsar, there are some effective home therapies for preventing acidity:
- Throughout the day, drink coriander water infusion. To create it, mix one part crushed coriander seeds with six parts water and leave overnight. Strain, add a pinch of rock sugar, and drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
- Chewing half a teaspoon of fennel seeds after a meal is beneficial.
- Nothing beats a glass of coconut water in the morning.
- Fennel sharbat (juice) can also be consumed in the afternoon. Fennel seeds should be combined with rock sugar or misri.
- Soak raisins in water overnight and drink it on an empty stomach the next morning.
- Drink lukewarm milk with 1 tsp cow’s ghee before bedtime. This will also aid in the treatment of sleeplessness and constipation.
- Drink rosewater and mint water to relieve stress and aid digestion.
- Fruits such as sweet pomegranates, bananas, stewed apples, plums, raisins, apricots, and coconut can help to neutralize acidity.
- Drink 15-20 mL of amla juice twice daily. If you’re taking it as a powder, half a teaspoon before meals twice a day should suffice.
- For acidity, 1 tsp Shatavari with milk twice a day is beneficial.
- Take half a teaspoon of Yastimadhu or Licorice root powder on an empty stomach twice a day.
- Drink 20 mL of aloe vera juice on an empty stomach in the morning and evening.
