WhatsApp’s end-to-end encrypted chat backups will be available for iOS and Android starting Thursday (October 14, 2021), according to Facebook. For years, the company has offered end-to-end encryption for chats, but now you can receive the same level of security for your backups.
Because WhatsApp backups are stored in iCloud or Google Drive, Apple or Google could be forced to hand over the backups to governments or law enforcement. You can now safeguard your WhatsApp cloud backups with a password or a 64-digit encryption key, which supposedly means that no one else can access the backup but you.
More information on how the encrypted backups function may be found in our post about the feature’s initial introduction as well as a white paper from Facebook. If you wish to enable end-to-end encrypted backups for your account, Facebook provides a guide here.
