How do people know who is in a couple now, and what are the best ways to stop being single?

And maybe it wasn’t for a long time, because, let’s be honest, how many serious relationships start at a drunken wedding party? If you go to weddings hoping to meet someone, you’re probably going to end up kissing yourself or having wild one-night stands with the cousin of the bride who came from another state or some other state. remote place in the world, and yes, it beat you up too much, but once you’re sober, you realize that the only thing they have in common is the miles of land between them, and that the blind love of the evening is not enough, if you want, to raise the possibility of trying it.

So, if this happens and there is a pandemic, you need to start thinking about other options. And even if you’re in your forties and don’t feel so young, it’s time to get with the times and download some dating apps, since a study from Stanford University’s Department of Sociology found that this could be the best way to match you with someone right now.

The relevance of the study

In the words of the same people who wrote the study, “Disintermediating your friends: How online dating in the U.S. replaces other ways to meet,” they say about the article’s importance. “In this article, we show that online dating has replaced friends as the most common way for heterosexual couples to meet in the U.S.” Since World War II, the old ways of meeting a partner (through family, at church, or in the neighborhood) have become less common. Since about 1995, the number of people who meet through friends has been going down. So, you naive person who thought you’d meet the love of your life at your best friend’s wedding, how do you feel about the above?

The study

The research, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was done by a group of experts led by sociologist Michael Rosenfeld. They used information from the database of American studies called “How Couples Meet and Stay Together” (HCMST) to find out how people meet their spouses or other romantic or emotional partners. These studies were done in 2009 and 2017.

Rosenfald found that people, at least heterosexual ones, tend to get to know their partners more online than through personal contacts or connections. So, they say that traditional ways of meeting people or going on dates started to go out of style as early as 1940.

In 2009, 22% of heterosexual adults in the U.S. said they met their partners online. In 2017, 39% of heterosexual adults said they did the same. In fact, since World War II, dating and meeting people was by far the most common way for heterosexual couples to meet.

Two technological innovations were the key

The experts in this study think that two very important technological advances are to blame for the decline in relationships based on friendships and other things like that. First, the launch of the World Wide Web (www) around 1995, which made it easier to do research or ask questions over the Internet and added graphics. Second, the introduction and widespread use of smartphones after 2007. And, well, it shouldn’t be a surprise that one of their findings was that the number of citations for online applications has gone up in line with how much more people use this kind of device.

According to the analysis, 2013 was the year when heterosexual couples in this country started dating less through family and friends and more through online dating.

What is the advantage of meeting people through online sites?

The first and most obvious benefit is that if you always have your phone with you, you can meet new people and go on dates whenever you want.

In an interview, Rosenfald talks about this and says that “When compared to the number of people your mom or best friend might know, the number of possible dates on online dating sites is much larger. The number of people who use dating sites is a huge plus. Even if you don’t like the people on the app, you can find someone better for you if there are more of them.” When asked what his research might show about the online world, he said, “Internet dating is a small but good addition to our world because it brings people together who wouldn’t have talked to each other otherwise. One person said, “Internet dating has the potential to help people who have been ignored by family, friends, and work.”
