A new trailer for The Matrix Resurrections has been released, and it’s just as strange as the original. Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), and newcomers Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II — who appears to be playing a new version of Morpheus — all return in the new video. This is most likely the final glimpse we’ll get at the film before it hits theaters on December 22.
The latest trailer for the film is all about echoes from the past and the endless loops that everyone seems to be trapped in. The teaser contains a lot of new footage, but it also features a lot of visuals from earlier Matrix films, particularly the first one. Neo and Trinity are trapped in a new simulation that appears to be quite similar to the previous one, but with unexpected deviations and modifications. Abdul-Mateen II’s new version of Morpheus and Johnathan Groff’s new version of Agent Smith are among the alterations.
Aside from the story exposition in this trailer — which may or may not reveal major plot points — there’s a lot of action. There are gunfights, fistfights, and even some new Neo abilities, such as the ability to appear to make vehicles explode at will. Most crucially, the trailer confirms that Neo retains his kung fu skills.
Lana Wachowski, who directed the original trilogy with her sister Lily, is in charge of The Matrix Resurrections. Christina Ricci, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Jada Pinkett Smith, who reprises her role as Niobe from the original films, are all-star in the film.
The Matrix Resurrections will be released on December 22nd in theaters and on HBO Max.
