Diehard fans of the Bridgerton series will be familiar with Penelope’s other series. Nicola Coughlin, who plays Penelope Featherington in the drama, is also one of the stars of Channel 4’s Derry Girls.
Two seasons (or series, as they are called on this side of the Atlantic) of the award-winning series are already available on Netflix, but Derry Girls Season 3 has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, Coughlin announced on Twitter that filming for the third season of Derry Girls will begin later this year.
The novel “The Derry Girls” is set, of course, in the city of Derry, Northern Ireland, at the end of the Troubles. The titular girls form a group at a Catholic school: friends Erin, Claire, and Michelle, Erin’s cousin Eagle, and English cousin Michelle James. The five “girls” overcome issues of popularity, faith, first love, and lots and lots of awkwardness. The series has won numerous screenwriting and comedy awards and has also been nominated for several BAFTAs. In addition, clips from the series have become popular sounds on TikTok.
When will the Derry Girls Season 3 air?
Despite assurances that filming of Derry Girls will begin in 2021, no official premiere date has been set for the third season. According to RTE, Nicola Coughlin said the series is on hold because the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented filming in Derry. “We are still waiting because filming in Derry is critical to the series,” she said.
Viewers are eagerly awaiting the new season, but Coughlin is anxious to shoot. On Twitter, he said he was “bloody impatient,” despite the pandemic having postponed filming “several times.”
Coughlin has not one, but two entire series waiting for a premiere date. Netflix has announced that filming for the second season of Bridgerton will begin this spring. The second season will likely be based on Julia Quinn’s second novel, The Viscount Who Loved Me. Coughlin’s character, Penelope Featherington, stars in the fourth book in the Bridgerton series, Romancing Mr. Coughlin.
Who is in the cast of the Derry Girls Season 3?
The cosmopolitan UK reports that all the girls will be back in town for season three. Saoirse Monica Jackson is expected to return as Erin, Coughlin as Claire, Louise Harland as Space Eagle, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell as Michelle, and Dylan Llewellyn as James. We also expect the return of her manager, Sister Michael, played by Siobhan McSweeney.
‘Derry Girls’ creator Lisa McGee has revealed to Radio Times that she would love to see comedian Dara O Brian in a future series. Dara O Brian presents the long-running UK show Laugh a Week and is a regular guest on The Big Fat Quiz. She has expressed her love for Derry Girls on social media, praising, in particular, the performance of Saor’s Monica Jackson.
There is no information yet on other guest stars or cameos, but we will update this article with relevant updates.
What is the plot of the Derry Girls Season 3?
On his Twitter feed, Coughlin wrote that “the plots of this series are the best we’ve ever done,” but did not reveal any details. In an interview with the Belfast Times, he discussed the challenges of producing the third season and commented on the storylines. “At the moment we can’t do anything with audience participation, so logistically it’s very difficult.
But I spoke to Lisa McGee recently and she told me about the storylines. They’re so brilliant that I’m not surprised – it’s just amazing – but they made me want to do it now.”
The series maintains a complex balance between acknowledging the politically fraught world in which the girls live and maintaining a broadly lighthearted tone. The turmoil, the conflict between those who wanted to annex Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland and those who wanted to remain part of Great Britain, serves more as the background noise of violence for the characters in Derry Girls than to define their lives. Aside from this historical context, not much is known about the plot of the third season.
