“Pappu Can’t Dance Sala” from “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na” comes to mind. Many people may be surprised to learn that the bespectacled man was the brains behind the outstanding romance/drama “Kapoor & Sons.” Shakun Batra demonstrated once again this year that he is one of Bollywood’s most talented actors. ‘Pappu’ may not be a dancer, but he sure knows how to direct!
Batra has co-written and directed another another love drama, this time for Amazon Prime Video under the Dharma Productions banner–but this time with a few twists.
“Gehraiyaan” (published on February 11, 2022) tells the narrative of Alisha, or Alisha, a young, independent yoga instructor (played by Deepika Padukone).
Karan (Dhairya Karwa), her 6-year-old boyfriend, is a promising writer. Alisha, who is struggling financially, strives to make ends meet while also being a supportive companion to Karan while he works on his manuscript. However, we learn via a quick discussion between the two that Alisha’s cousin, Tia (played by Ananya Panday), has recently returned from America and has invited the two of them on a boat tour. She introduces them to Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi), who is not only betrothed to Tia, but also works for her late father’s company.
At first glance, it is clear to us, the viewers, that Alisha and Zain share a terrible past–perhaps one of growing up in a dysfunctional family. Alisha’s flashbacks of her mother’s sadness, as well as her statement to her daughter that she “feels stuck,” support this theory. Despite being a devoted mother, she hangs herself after feeling powerless in her marriage with Al’s father (Naseeruddin Shah). Alisha has the misfortune of witnessing it as a child, and the horrible memory of it still haunts her as an adult.
Alisha and Zain begin their secret love affair after feeling continually taken for granted by her partner, unable to deny the pull to her cousin’s lover, and with some flirting offers on the latter’s part.
The film received a bombardment of negative reviews and comments from the moment it was released. The viewers’ concerns focused on the lack of a storyline and Deepika Padukone’s “odd” explicitness in portraying her character.
