After falling television ratings for film’s greatest night in recent years, the Oscars will have a host for the first time since 2018, according to ABC.
The 94th Academy Awards, which will be held on March 27 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, will mark the return of Tinseltown’s most prestigious prize-giving event. Last year’s unconventional edition, which was hosted without a host at a Los Angeles train station, drew just over 10 million viewers, a 56 percent drop from 2020, which was already a record low.
Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, said a virtual panel discussion held by the Television Critics Association, “You heard it here first, I can confirm that this year’s Oscars will feature a host.”
Erwich would not say whether Jimmy Kimmel, the host of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the last two hosts of the Oscars in 2017 and 2018, would return. “It might be me,” he joked.
After homophobic tweets he posted some years ago resurfaced, comedian Kevin Hart withdrew from hosting the Academy Awards in 2019. While that year’s hostless style received plaudits and was even replicated by other award shows like the Emmys, future Oscar ceremonies were criticized for missing focus and humor.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also revealed on Tuesday that veteran director Glenn Weiss will direct the Oscars for the seventh year in a row. Few facts about the program, which will be produced by Will Packer and has been postponed for the second year in a row, have been verified.
The postponement was announced months before the Omicron variation led many Hollywood shows to cancel in-person events this winter, apparently to avoid clashing with the Winter Olympics in February and the Super Bowl in Los Angeles.
