It’s difficult to witness your pet in pain. Getting them vaccinated on a regular basis is the greatest way to protect them against recognized diseases. Puppy immunizations begin as early as 6-8 weeks of age and should be finished between 12-16 months of age, after which booster doses are routinely given, most of which are given once a year.

Dr. Vinod Sharma, Head of Veterinary Services at DCC Animal Hospital, has compiled a list of the five most critical immunizations for your canine companions.

Rabies

Rabies is a lethal “zoonotic illness” that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Rabies is spread by the Lyssa virus, which infects the central nervous system and causes headaches, anxiety, hallucinations, excessive drooling, increased aggression, fear of water, paralysis, and death in nearly all instances. As a result, starting at the age of 12 weeks, your furry buddy needs to be vaccinated against rabies for the first time and subsequently on a regular basis.

Distemper

Distemper, sometimes known as Carré’s disease, is a highly contagious viral infection that can cause severe gastrointestinal difficulties, respiratory issues such as severe cough with pus-like drainage from the eyes and nostrils, and possibly fatal convulsions and paralysis. Distemper has no effective therapy, and the only way to safeguard your dog is to start vaccines at the age of eight weeks.

Parvovirus

Another highly contagious and sometimes lethal disease, Canine Parvovirus is a highly resistant DNA virus that is especially dangerous to puppies and elderly dogs. Severe vomiting, a high fever of up to 41.5°C, and bloody diarrhoea are common symptoms, and young pups can die from dehydration or intoxication within 72 hours after developing the disease if they are not treated. Even animals that have survived the sickness can succumb to the disease’s long-term effects, such as immunodeficiency and cardiac problems, within a few years. Parvovirus vaccines are also given at 8 weeks of age, along with three other doses.

Hepatitis

Canine adenovirus 1 (CAV-1) causes a multitude of symptoms, including fever and inflammation of the eyes and kidneys, and is mainly transferred through water or food containing urine. Without proper treatment or vaccination, the virus can swiftly reach the liver, causing tiredness, vomiting, and diarrhoea, as well as death, in puppies and dogs with weakened immune systems.

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis, another zoonotic illness, is caused by bacteria and may not show any signs at all, making it particularly deadly for both animals and people. This extremely contagious disease is caused by the Leptospira Bacterium, which is usually found in contaminated soil or water. It can cause significant organ damage in young or immuno-compromised dogs, often leading to death. As a result, beginning at the age of eight weeks, Leptospirosis immunizations are essential for your pet’s continuing good health.

While these are the five most basic but necessary immunizations for your canine companions, they may require extra shots for other diseases, such as the coronavirus, at any time during their lives.
