As doubt surrounded the national team’s future, cricket legend Kapil Dev claimed Virat Kohli needed to sacrifice his ego to play under a new leader after relinquishing the Test captaincy. Kohli, 33, announced his stunning exit late on Saturday after resigning as T20 skipper last year and being fired as one-day captain shortly after. Kapil Dev, who captained India to World Cup triumph in 1983, praised Kohli’s choice, saying he was “going through a difficult moment” and “looked to be under a lot of strain.”

Kohli, on the other hand, will have to knuckle down and bite his tongue if he wants to stay in the squad under a new captain, according to him.

“Sunil Gavaskar was a teammate of mine. K Srikkanth and (Mohammad) Azharuddin were my coaches. I didn’t have an ego, “Dev, 63, was reported in the Mid-Day newspaper as stating, alluding to previous era greats.

“Virat will have to put his ego aside and play under the tutelage of a young cricketer. This will benefit him as much as Indian cricket. Virat should mentor the new skipper as well as the new players. We can’t afford to lose Virat Kohli, our batter.”

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are viewed as the frontrunners to succeed Kohli, with Rishabh Pant, 24, a distant third.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah, according to TV pundit Harsha Bhogle, should also be considered. Rohit, 34, is a T20 and one-day international skipper who has guided the Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles (IPL).

In the absence of Rohit, Rahul, 29, led India in the recent second Test in South Africa and will head the one-day side in the forthcoming series, which starts on Wednesday.

‘Crisis’

The resignation of the outspoken and at times aggressive Kohli sparked speculation about rifts with the sport’s governing body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Kohli and BCCI chief Saurav Ganguly publicly contradicted one other in December over his decision to quit down as white-ball captain. According to the Hindustan Times, Kohli turned down the BCCI’s offer to retire with fanfare after his 100th Test in Bangalore in February, when India plays Sri Lanka.

Ayaz Memon, a senior cricket journalist, told AFP that there was clearly discontent between Kohli and the authorities.

“You don’t need any statements; you can sense that from the way he relinquished the T20 captaincy and subsequently the ODI captaincy,” he remarked.

He also stated that the new captain will face a task in reviving the team’s batting fortunes from the current “crisis.”

“It’s a difficult scenario for India because you have a team that has crumbled, especially the batting,” he remarked.

BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal said he was unconcerned. “With the kind of bench strength we have, I am confident we will get through this period as well,” Dhumal told AFP.

“It’s just a shift in leadership position that will occur, and when someone eventually takes over, they’ll take it from here and ensure the team gives its all on the field.”
