When winter arrives, a slew of cold-related illnesses begin to knock on the door, putting one at danger of becoming unwell. The dry winter air hastens virus transmission, making those with weakened immune systems prone to a variety of ailments.

The common cold is one of the most common health problems during this period, and while there is no cure for the viral illness, it is recommended that adequate nutrition be consumed to aid in speedy recovery.

Runny nose, congestion, sneezing, sore throat, and coughing are some of the symptoms of a common cold.

Tanvee Tutlani, Celebrity Nutritionist, Dietitian, and Corporate Health Educator, recommends the following foods and beverages to help manage the symptoms of a common cold.

Kiwi fruit

Kiwi is high in antioxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and other nutrients, and it not only helps to shorten the duration of illness but also protects against viral infections. The nutrient-dense fruit promotes the formation of antibodies and white blood cells, which aid the body’s defense against infections that cause disease. Oranges, blueberries, and pineapple are other fruits strong in vitamin C that can help to shorten the duration and intensity of a cold.

Fluids

Fluids can help you recover faster from the illness. Through coughing and sneezing, moisture helps to remove trapped mucus and expel bacteria or viruses. To treat a sore throat and relieve a congested nose, drink plenty of fluids such as simple water, coconut water, juices, herbal tea, and so on. Caffeinated beverages, such as coffee and alcohol, should be avoided in excess as they might aggravate a cold.

Yoghurt

Yogurt is high in probiotic bacteria, which helps to strengthen the immune system. It’s also high in protein, which aids in the fight against viral and bacterial infections as well as speedy recovery.

Ginger

Ginger’s anti-inflammatory and antiviral qualities can help to alleviate the symptoms of a common cold. To control pain, relieve congestion, and soothe a sore throat, drink ginger tea or chew raw ginger.

Honey

Honey’s therapeutic and antimicrobial characteristics make it a good cold and flu therapy alternative. Honey’s sweet flavor encourages salivation and mucus production, which aid in clearing obstructed airways.

Nuts and seeds

When you’re feeling under the weather, including nuts and seeds in your diet is a great way to boost your dietary protein and add some vital fats to your diet. Selenium, vitamin D, zinc, copper, and other elements found in nuts and seeds aid to keep the immune system and mucous membranes healthy.
