The messaging disparities between Android phones and iPhones have divided us for far too long. But, thankfully, one of the most vexing aspects of mixed iOS/Android group texting is soon to disappear.
Google has been beta testing and gradually pushing out a tweak to the Android Messages app that would display iPhone users’ message reactions as emojis, according to 9to5Google. Until now, if an iPhone user pressed down on a message and chose the thumbs up symbol, the message would be transmitted to all Android users in the chain as “[name] loved a message.”
If an iPhone user appreciates a message from an Android buddy, the thumbs up emoji will now appear beneath the message. It’s a small move, but it’ll make a big impact for those of us who have friends and family that use different mobile operating systems. Of course, message reactions appear organically in text interactions between iPhone users, but turning each one into its own text for Android users is a terrific way to bloat a group text and upset everyone involved.
This is a huge step forward in the relationship between iOS and Android, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. Message effects and Apple Pay Cash are two capabilities that iOS users enjoy that Android users do not. Not to mention the dreaded green text bubbles that appear at the conclusion of mixed text chains on the iPhone.
