In the wake of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Microsoft has halted all new product and service sales in Russia.
Microsoft’s president and vice chair, Brad Smith, announced in a blog post that the company is ceasing “several parts” of its operations in Russia “in accordance with governmental sanctions determinations.”
“The images and stories emanating from the war in Ukraine horrify, outrage, and sadden us, as they do the rest of the world, and we condemn Russia’s illegal, unprovoked, and illegitimate invasion,” Smith wrote. “We believe that taking concrete steps in concert with the decisions made by these nations is the most effective way of assisting Ukraine, and we will take additional steps as the situation evolves.”
One of Microsoft’s main objectives, according to the company, is to preserve Ukraine’s cybersecurity while also assisting Ukrainians by providing technical and financial support to critical nonprofit organizations. In a blog post from February, Microsoft described the efforts it is taking to safeguard Ukraine from cyberattacks.
Microsoft’s decision to cease sales in Russia follows similar moves by a slew of other big companies, including Apple, which earlier this week halted sales in Russia. Meta, YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok, and Twitter, among other social media platforms, have taken a range of initiatives and strategies to combat misinformation about the Ukraine war. Just hours ago, Airbnb shut down all of its activities in Russia and Belarus, while Google halted all ad sales in the country.
