The Nipah virus is a zoonotic virus that can spread from animals to people. After an epidemic in Malaysia in 1999, it was found for the first time. The 1999 outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, resulted in approximately 300 human cases and over 100 deaths. Singapore was also affected by the pandemic. The Nipah virus can also be spread via contaminated food or illness. It is not an airborne infection, but it can have serious consequences for both humans and animals. According to the World Health Organization, this virus is very contagious in pigs (WHO).

How can you stay safe against the Nipah Virus?
There is currently no vaccination available for the Nipah virus. During a suspected epidemic, all precautions should be taken to prevent the spread of the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the following precautions to avoid animal-to-human transmission:
Carefully select fresh fruits. Any fruit with signs of bat bites should be discarded if you’re picking fruits from a farm.
When working with sick animals, use protective equipment such as gloves and masks. Pigs and bats should be avoided at all costs. Avoid going to areas where bats are known to roost.
Avoid close contact with infected people in areas where there is a suspected outbreak or positive cases of the Nipah virus. When encountering someone with symptoms, wash your hands with soap and water on a frequent basis.
“The case fatality rate for Nipah virus is believed to be between 40% and 75%. Health-care personnel who are caring for or handling specimens from patients with a suspected or confirmed infection should follow standard infection control precautions at all times “WHO is mentioned.
