Russia-Ukraine Agree on Humanitarian Corridors

Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine began its second week on Thursday. Even as the two countries’ representatives convened in Belarus for a second round of negotiations, heavy missile strikes marked the occasion.

Meanwhile, during a 90-minute phone call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated unequivocally that his country will fulfill the objectives of the military operation in Ukraine no matter what. According to a Reuters article citing Macron’s adviser, Macron believes that the “worst is yet to come” in Ukraine, and that Putin’s objective is to grab the “entire” country.

Throughout the day, Russian warplanes rained down on Ukraine’s cities, with the Chernihiv region reporting a high casualty toll of at least 22 killed and four more wounded.

The following are the top five events from the second week of the Russia-Ukraine conflict:

  1. According to AFP, the Ukrainian and Russian delegations met in Belarus for the second round of talks during the day and agreed on humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians.
  2. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has urged for direct talks with Putin, stating that any word is “more essential than gunfire.” He questioned Putin what he is frightened of, sarcastically adding that he “doesn’t bite” to the suggestion.
  3. Russian missiles attacked two schools and private buildings in Ukraine’s Chernihiv area earlier in the day, killing at least 22 people and injuring four more. Viacheslav Chaus, the regional governor, initially stated that nine people had died, but the death toll has now risen as debris has been cleared.
  4. According to the United Nations, one million people have fled the conflict-torn Ukraine in the last week, accounting for 2% of the country’s population. The majority of the refugees have arrived in Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Moldova.
  5. The European Union (EU) has agreed to grant temporary protection to migrants fleeing Ukraine’s conflict, as well as establishing a humanitarian center in Romania.
