For decades, skincare professionals and physicians have emphasized the need of making sunscreen a non-negotiable part of your skincare routine. Yasmin Karachiwala, a celebrity fitness instructor, and dermatologist Jaishree Sharad have teamed up to promote the use of sunscreen. They’ve also discussed why it’s important and how skipping it might cause lasting damage to your skin.
Know the importance of sunscreen for healthy skinÂ
Karachiwala asks Dr. Sharad “the importance of why one must apply sunscreen” in an Instagram video. Dr. Sharad responds by stating that sunlight contains rays that are exceedingly damaging to the skin. “Sunlight consists of ultraviolet A, B, and C, visible light, infrared rays, and blue light,” she adds.
She goes on to explain, “Explaining further,” “Skin cancer is caused by ultraviolet B. All other types of rays cause hyperpigmentation, early symptoms of aging, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, allergy, rashes, sunburn, and suntan, to name a few.”
Another typical concern, according to Karachiwala, is determining which sunscreen is best for one’s skin type.
Dr. Sharad went on to say that people with oily skin should use a water-based or matte sunscreen. Dry skin, on the other hand, is best served by cream-based sunscreens. While those with sensitive skin should use mineral-based sunscreen, normal skin can use any form of sunscreen.
A least of SPF 30 is required, according to the doctor, when it comes to the value of the sun protection factor (SPF) in your sunscreen. Those with hyperpigmented skin should apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher.
“We should look after the PA value in sunscreen as that protects us from Ultraviolet A,” Dr Sharad said, adding that the PA value should be either triple plus (+++) or four plus (++++ ).Â
If we are outside for more than two hours, we should reapply sunscreen, according to the expert. Even if the sunscreen has an SPF of 30 or 50, this is true. Indoors, too, sunscreen is a must because the blue light emitted by our cellphones, televisions, laptops, and computer screens is harmful to our skin, according to Dr. Sharad.
Avoiding skipping your sunscreen is a simple move that can go a long way toward protecting your skin. Make sure you keep it on you at all times so you may reapply as needed.
