Ukraine agreed to meet with Russia in Belarus on Sunday, according to Russian state media, citing Moscow officials.
The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the two sides would meet at an undisclosed location along the Belarusian border, but did not specify a time.
President Vladimir Putin reportedly ordered Russian nuclear forces to remain on high alert in reaction to what he described as “aggressive comments” by senior NATO members.
Ukraine’s decision to commit to discussions came just hours after Zelensky stated Ukraine was willing to meet with Russia for peace talks, but not in a country that has previously served as a staging ground for invasion. He stated that Ukraine was open to talks in other countries that were not hostile to his country.
He later announced on his Telegram channel that he had spoken with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. So yet, he hasn’t supplied any other information.
Following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine’s pro-Western neighbor, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukrainian authorities of squandering “an opportunity” for discussions.
Russia said its delegation was ready to meet with Ukrainian officials in Gomel, Belarus, a place Kyiv rejected because Zelenskiy claimed Minsk was complicit in Russia’s incursion. Ukrainian officials have labeled the move by the Kremlin as propaganda.
