The public sector NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) has planned to launch the four-tonne GSAT-24 communication satellite using a European aerospace firm Arianespace’s Ariane-5 rocket.
According to NSIL, an Ariane-5 rocket operated by Arianespace would be used to launch GSAT-24, a four-tonne class communication Ku-band satellite manufactured by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
The NSIL will launch the GSAT-24 satellite in the first quarter of 2022, which will be wholly sponsored by the NSIL.
GSAT-24’s whole satellite capacity will be leased to Tata Sky, a long-term customer, to suit their DTH application demands.
NSIL will own and operate the GSAT-24 satellite on a commercial basis.
K. Sivan, Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, ISRO, told IANS previously that NSIL will buy three ISRO communication satellites: GSAT 20, GSAT 22, and GSAT 24.
Apart from purchasing satellites from ISRO, NewSpace India Ltd can also lease assets from the latter.
In response to a question on transferring ISRO’s other satellites to NSIL, Sivan stated: “We’re considering transferring assets on a lease basis. There are plans in place.”
