US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the US has received “quite credible evidence” of purposeful strikes on civilians in Ukraine as part of Russia’s ongoing military campaign against its neighbor on Sunday. Blinken went on to say that the US was documenting these claims in order to assist appropriate organizations in any possible war crimes investigations.
“We’ve seen very convincing claims of deliberate strikes on civilians,” Blinken said on CNN’s “State of the Union” show. He stated, “We’ve seen extremely credible reports concerning the employment of particular weaponry.”
“Right now, what we’re doing is documenting everything, putting it together, looking at it, and making sure that as people and relevant organizations and institutions examine whether or not war crimes have been or are being committed, we can assist whatever they’re doing,” Blinken added.
Following Russian soldiers’ seizure of Europe’s largest nuclear power facility in southeastern Ukraine, which sparked a global outcry, the US embassy in Ukraine posted a tweet on Friday calling the incident a war crime.
According to CNN, the US State Department sent a message to all of its embassies in Europe instructing them not to share the Kyiv embassy’s tweet declaring the attack a war crime.
Blinken did not respond to the embassy’s post, and the State Department declined to say whether the tweet reflected the US government’s general perspective on the subject.
Russia has denied attacking civilian areas and has described the campaign it launched on February 24 as a “special military operation,” saying it has no plans to occupy Ukraine, which was once part of the Soviet Union under Moscow’s control but has since turned west and applied for membership in NATO and the European Union.
