While Omicron is considered to be milder than prior variants, some post-Covid symptoms can last for weeks and are now being seen in persons of all ages, particularly those with weakened immune systems. Chief Justice of India NV Ramana recently described Omicron as a silent murderer, revealing that he is still experiencing symptoms 25 days after infection.
These frequent post-covid symptoms include exhaustion, cognitive fog, heart trouble, shortness of breath, sleep issues, and body aches in persons of all ages, including youngsters and the elderly.
“In some individuals, a persistent inflammatory reaction and in others, an autoimmune process initiated by the Coronavirus that builds up after recovery from Covid are the causes of lasting Omicron symptoms. Because each person has a unique immunological response, the chances of experiencing long-term symptoms after using Covid vary from person to person. Approximately 50-60% of patients experience lingering symptoms for 3 weeks or longer after recovering from Covid “Senior Director – Internal Medicine & Medical Advisor – Max Hospital, Gurgaon, Dr. Ashutosh Shukla states.
Who is the most affected by post-Covid complications?
Although Omicron can infect people of all ages, the severity of the sickness is likely to be greater in the elderly population over 60.
“People with comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiac diseases, chronic kidney disease, the elderly, cancer patients, and patients on immunosuppressive medication are more likely to develop severe disease after contracting the Omicron variant of Covid-19,” says Dr. Santosh Jha, Pulmonologist and Critical Care Specialist, Porvoo Transition Care.
“People over the age of 60, as well as those with one or more comorbid conditions, are more vulnerable. Those who have had a severe case of covid illness are more prone to have symptoms that last a long time. People who have had a lot of stress, anxiety, or depression before starting Covid are more likely to have symptoms that last a long time “Dr. Shukla agrees.
Following are a few of the most prevalent post-covid symptoms:
- Fatigue and weakness that persist
- Breathing problems, such as shortness of breath
- Memory lapses, attention problems, and mental fog
- Inability to sleep
- Muscle pains and aches in the body
- Migraines
- Low spirits and a racing heart
- Bronchitis caused by Covid, which might cause a bothersome cough
When it comes to adults
- Exacerbation of existing co-morbidities* Confusion in the mind
- Post-covid weakness
Children’s health
“A small percentage of children have had Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome after covid,” says Dr. Ashit Bhagwati, Honorary Consultant in Internal Medicine and Honorary Academic Director ICU at Bhatia Hospital Mumbai. “However, some adults have also come with lung fibrosis due to delayed resolution and have had to undergo lung rehabilation exercises.”
“Headache, lower back pain, lethargy, hair loss, exhaustion, anxiety, tingling sensation in ears, and dyspnea are the most typical symptoms reported in post-covid patients,” says Dr Charu Dutt Arora, Consultant Physician and Infectious Disease Specialist Head, Ameri Health, Asian Hospital, Faridabad.
