Mercedes-Benz is serious about electric vehicle economy, as its EQXX electric vehicle concept demonstrates.
On a single charge, the car traveled from Sindelfingen in southern Germany to Cassis on the Côte d’Azur in France – a distance of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles). The drive was completed at ordinary road speeds, including a long 140 km/h cruise on the German Autobahn, and in a variety of weather conditions, including cold and rainy conditions, according to Mercedes-Benz.
The car’s battery was still 15% charged at the end of the excursion, which would have gotten us another 140 kilometers (87 miles). The car’s average usage was “a record-breaking low of 8.7 kWh per 100 kilometers,” according to Mercedes-Benz.
“We’ve demonstrated that efficiency is the new money with our successful road trip to the south of France. This achievement also demonstrates the effectiveness of our new collaborative development method, which incorporates numerous lessons learned from the Mercedes-AMG Formula One team and its cutting-edge experience in electric powertrains. (…) “With the VISION EQXX, we will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible,” Mercedes-Benz CTO Markus Schäfer, responsible for Development and Purchasing, said in a release.
The Vision EQXX is a future concept with an emphasis on aerodynamics and battery economy that was first announced in January 2022. Roof solar panels, which might add roughly 24 km (15 miles) of range, could boost its exceptional range even further.
In a blog post, Mercedes-Benz explained how it accomplished this achievement. The Vision EQXX’s extraordinarily low drag coefficient of 0.17, as well as the specially built Bridgestone tires, helped keep the car’s battery from depleting too quickly at highway speeds. The car’s lightweight build (it weighs 1,755 kg) also helped save energy when traveling the Swiss highlands. Regenerative braking and the solar roof both had a role in returning energy to the batteries.
It will be interesting to see how these figures hold up when the Vision EQXX is transformed into a vehicle that can be purchased. There’s no news on when that might happen right now.
