After deleting a tweet from Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, the country banned the social networking platform in June 2021, citing abusive behavior laws.
Nigeria swiftly retaliated by suspending Twitter, citing “consistent usage of the platform for actions that threaten Nigeria’s corporate existence.” Ironically, the country’s ban on Twitter was declared by the country itself.
According to Reuters, the suspension was lifted on Wednesday, January 13 at midnight.Â
In a statement, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, director general of the National Information Technology Development Agency, said, “Twitter has promised to act with a respectful awareness of Nigerian laws and the national culture and history on which such legislation has been constructed.”

Twitter has promised to hire a country representative to interact with Nigerian authorities, as well as cooperate with the federal government and the larger sector “to develop a Code of Conduct in line with global best practices, applicable in practically all developed countries,” according to Abdullahi.
