A new drug combination has been found to be effective against COVID-19 infection, according to a new study.
According to a study conducted in animals and cell cultures, a new medication combination can reduce infection by the S-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19.
The combination of the antiviral medications nafamostat and Pegasys meets all availability and efficacy requirements, according to preliminary test results published in the journal Viruses.
Denis Kainov, a professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, said, “This combination efficiently inhibits the virus” (NTNU).
The trials were carried out on cell cultures and hamsters, according to the researchers.
They cautioned that this does not necessarily imply that the combination works in humans, but it could be a useful hint for researchers who are currently experimenting with nafamostat to combat COVID-19.
According to the researchers, nafamostat is already being used as a monotherapy against COVID-19 in Japan and is undergoing rigorous study in other countries.
Pegasys is primarily used to treat hepatitis C at the moment. They claim that combining the two has a favorable effect.
“Both medications target a component in our cells called TMPRSS2, which is important for virus replication,” stated NTNU professor Magnar Bjoras.
Only minimal doses of the combo drug are required, according to the researchers.
“Low doses of the medications in combination could offer a number of clinical benefits. including fewer adverse effects and better patient outcomes, “NTNU doctorate research fellow Aleksandr Ianevski said.
The researchers believe that the combo treatment will save lives as well as make patients’ lives easier.
They pointed out that Nafamostat is quite inexpensive, whereas Pegasys has a larger price tag.
The authors of the study observed that “S-CoV-2 and its vaccine/immune-escaping variations continue to pose a severe threat to public health because of a lack of effective, readily deployable, and broadly available treatments.”
“Our research could give a proactive treatment for the existing epidemic and potential future coronavirus outbreaks,” they concluded, “which is still desperately needed in many regions of the world.”
Other researchers involved in the study include those from Oslo University Hospital and the University of Oslo in Norway, as well as Oncodesign, a French precision medicine company, the University of Tartu in Estonia, and the University of Helsinki in Finland.
