Illness caused by the Covid-19 pandemic cut life expectancy by the most since World War II last year, Reuters reports citing an Oxford University study.
According to the report, life expectancy in 22 countries has decreased by more than six months since 2019, and life expectancy has decreased in 27 of the 29 countries studied, including the United States, Europe, and Chile. In the majority of countries, men’s life expectancy has decreased more than women’s, according to the report. The greatest loss in life expectancy was seen in men from the United States, who lost 2.2 years in comparison to 2019. “The fact that our results highlight such a large impact that is directly attributable to Covid-19 shows how devastating a shock it has been for many countries,” said Dr. Ridhi Kashyap, co-lead author of the report, which was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology. Dr. Kashyap appealed to a broader range of countries, including those with low and middle incomes.
In the United States, the increase in mortality was primarily noticed among persons in their working years and those under the age of 60. Deaths caused by Covid-19, on the other hand, contributed more significantly to the increase in mortality among persons over 60, according to the Oxford University study.

The investigation will be carried out by a group of 20 scientists. After an initial UN investigation, it was discovered that the data provided by Chinese experts was insufficient to clarify crucial questions about Covid-19’s origin.
