Most people get nervous in situations like job interviews. After all, it’s something you can’t control and you don’t know exactly what will happen. If you need that job or want to get the job of your dreams, you may feel anxious or pressured.

To help you get through this inevitable part of your working life, we’re going to give you some tips on how to do a job interview that will make you feel more comfortable and give your interviewer the impression that you’re competent, professional, and kind. You only get one chance to make a good first impression.

Prepare in advance for the job interview

This is a trick that works every time, but not everyone does it. The recruiter knows right away who is ready for the interview. What does it all mean? Well, you should know your resume inside and out so you don’t go off on tangents when they ask you about it. You should also think about what problems they can help you with or what points you’ll bring up that are related to the job you’re applying for.

In order to prepare for the interview, you should also learn about the company, including what it does, who it serves, and what it looks like. What they do, what they want, and what they hope to accomplish. This is now very easy to do, thanks to websites and the official social media profiles of businesses. Look at them and write down what might be interesting to you.

Choose the Clothes According to the Position you Intend to Play

In a job interview, how you look will be the first thing people notice. It doesn’t matter if it is done in person or through a video conference. So, think about the impression you want to make and choose your clothes based on the job you want and the people you will be working with.

If you are going to an interview for a job at a law firm, an insurance company, or a bank, you should wear formal clothes like a suit jacket or shirt, light makeup, and not be too pushy. If you want to get a job at a young fashion store, you’ll need to be up-to-date and trendy, and you’ll need to pay close attention to every detail of how you look. No one wants to hire someone whose hair is a mess and who wants to work at a hair salon.

If you’re not sure what to wear, a white shirt and a tailored jacket will get you through almost anything. Depending on how formal the job will be, you can wear it with jeans, dress pants, or a skirt. And if it’s in the fashion industry, pay extra attention to your makeup, hair, and nails.

Take Care of Non-verbal Language

Nonverbal language is important in a way that most applicants don’t think about, so it’s important to control it. Make yourself approachable, smile, and don’t let your eyes wander around while you’re talking to someone. Don’t do things that show you’re nervous, like tapping on the table, crossing your arms in a defensive way, playing with a necklace or keys that make noise, or using your phone.

Turn off your phone when you get to the company where you’re going to be interviewed, or about ten minutes before if the interview is via videoconference. Don’t wait until the last minute, or you might forget. If your phone rings or you get a call during the job interview, you will not only have disrespected your interviewer, but you will also have shown a lack of professionalism that you may also show on the job, so more than one recruiter will cross you off the list just because of that.

Prepare the Interview Location

When you have a job interview via videoconference, it’s up to you to set up the room. Choose it and change it the same way you do with your clothes. It is important to choose the place in the house where you will connect. The most important thing is that the room looks clean and that there are no flags, religious symbols, or other personal items that might give off the wrong impression. If you’re not sure, it’s best to put the computer in front of a smooth wall and use that as your background. The attention will only be on you.

In the same way, make sure that you will not be interrupted at home. And if the doorbell rings by chance, don’t get up unless it is a case of “force majeure.” The job interview is very important.

Try the Interview Platform First

If you don’t know how to use Skype, Zoom, Teams, or whatever platform you’ll be using for the job interview, you should learn how to do it before the interview. The day before you can open an account, ask a family member or friend who already has one to help you test it out and get used to how it works. It looks very bad if someone is lost, doesn’t know where the buttons are, or can’t fix a technical problem during the interview.

In the same way, make sure everything works before you connect on the day of the interview, and pay special attention to how your camera and microphone are set up. If you have bad luck and the computer breaks, you can always fix it naturally, say you’re sorry and use your phone to talk. Also, have the app downloaded on it in case something goes wrong. If you are determined, you can turn a bad situation into a good one by showing that you can handle the unexpected without a problem. This will also help you make the good impression you want.
